In 2024, I was invited for a residency at the École du Chazelet, a former primary school that has been transformed into a cultural space designed to engage with the intersections of culture, ecology and mountain life.
Le Chazelet is a small hamlet located above La Grave in the Hautes-Alpes department.
In this mountain context I proposed the construction of a climbing wall both as a response to a local need and as a shared object, a space for exchange, play and everyday life.
We built it with Romain Paquis my friend and carpenter using on-site cuts and a custom structure fitted into a former classroom.
That same space once housed the workshop of a well-known guide and woodworker from the valley. The construction of the wall in hand-shaped ash wood in this once-inhabited space extends a memory of gestures and materials.
Between Briançon and Bourg d’Oisans there was no accessible training facility for local residents and guides despite the strong presence of climbing in the valley and its significance in local culture.
This wall fills a structural gap while proposing a situated form rooted in the territory made of local wood and shared gestures. It is now made freely available through the guides and the association.
It reflects the cultural importance of climbing in this valley shaped by La Meije and how this practice might evolve or transform in relation to the boulder chaos near Lac du Pontet located a few kilometers from the village.
The holds sculpted in ash reproduce grip typologies and movement sequences observed on these blocks.
Crashpads at the base of the wall are available to residents and guides to explore the surrounding areas and extend the gesture beyond the wall.
This project was carried out as part of the Résidences Vertes program by the French Ministry of Culture with the support of the DRAC PACA. It was led by the association Les Augures which supports the ecological transition of the cultural sector through responsible sustainable and locally grounded practices.

En 2024, j’ai été accueilli en résidence à l’École du Chazelet, une ancienne école réhabilitée en lieu culturel, pensé pour travailler aux enjeux croisés de la culture, de l’écologie et de la montagne.
Le Chazelet est un petit hameau situé au-dessus de La Grave, dans les Hautes-Alpes.
Dans ce contexte montagnard, j’ai proposé la construction d’un mur d’escalade, à la fois comme réponse à un besoin local et comme un objet de partage, un espace d’échanges, de jeu et de vie.
Nous l’avons posé avec Romain Paquis, mon ami charpentier, en découpes sur place et structure sur mesure, dans une ancienne salle de classe.
Ce même espace abritait autrefois l’atelier d’un guide et menuisier bien connu de la vallée. La fabrication du mur en frêne, à la main, dans ce lieu autrefois habité, prolonge une mémoire des gestes et des matériaux.
Entre Briançon et Bourg d’Oisans, il n’existait aucun espace d’entraînement accessible pour les habitant.es et les guides de la Grave, malgré la forte présence de la pratique dans la vallée et son importance dans la culture locale.
Ce mur comble un vide structurel tout en proposant une forme située, ancrée dans le territoire, faite de bois local et de gestes partagés. Il sera aujourd’hui mis à disposition librement par l'intermédiaire des guides et de l'association.
Il témoigne de l’importance culturelle de l’escalade dans cette vallée marquée par la Meije, et de la manière dont cette pratique pourrait se prolonger ou se transformer avec le chaos de blocs du lac du Pontet, situé à quelques kilomètres du village.
Les prises du mur, sculptées en frêne, reprennent des typologies de préhensions et des séquences de mouvements rencontrées sur ces blocs.
Les crashpads au pied du mur sont à disposition des habitant·es et des guides pour explorer les secteurs alentours, et prolonger le geste hors les murs.
Ce projet a été mené dans le cadre du programme Résidences Vertes du ministère de la Culture, avec le soutien de la DRAC PACA. Il a été porté par l’association Les Augures, qui œuvre à la transformation écologique du secteur culturel en soutenant des démarches responsables, durables et solidaires.
The route is situated in the Ecrins National Park, near Ailefroide - after getting a permit to explore the route on stoppers we have started to equip it with permanent protections on 2021.
This long vertical choregraphy comes as a concluding project to my research with ESAAA / Effondrement des Alpes, about the possible futures of climbing, the protected areas of Ailefroide and the Écrins national parc and links between mountain activities and aesthetic practices.
The trace of the route was visible as we go along, drawn with marker on a large print of the relief, in the exhibition "le visiteur, l'obstacle, la grâce" at CAC, Briançon.
The edelweiss, a rare and emblematic alpine flower. Long protected and associated with purity, mountains, and untouched nature, it is now grown under UV lights at low altitude for use in the cosmetics industry.
By showcasing this artificial cultivation, the installation questions a form of conservation at all costs: what remains of a species when it (and its image) is preserved but its environment is left behind?

L’edelweiss, fleur alpine rare et emblématique. Longtemps protégée et associée à un symbole de pureté, de montagne et de nature préservée, elle est aujourd’hui cultivée sous lampes UV à basse altitude pour être utilisée dans l’industrie cosmétique.
En exposant cette culture artificielle, l’installation interroge une forme de conservation à tout prix : que reste-t-il d’une espèce lorsqu'elle (et son image) est préservée mais son milieu abandonné ?
In 2018, as part of the Annecy landscape festival, we introduced a pair of black swans into the Annecy lake, an ecosystem dominated by the Polish swan (white swan) population for several generations.
Following several complaints, the black swans were removed a few months later by the municipality.
